Chirp

Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea - the Lord on high is mighty. Psalm 93:4

Insight

Like many folks living on the coast, my family evacuated our home to get out of the path of Hurricane Florence. We loaded up the car, hopped on I-40 and headed north with our final destination being my childhood hometown in Maryland. Even though we were hoping to drive straight through the night, our tired eyes got the better of us.

We crawled into our bed ready to catch a few hours of much-needed sleep. Our girls conked out almost instantaneously. Unfortunately, having a heavy heart and a lot on my mind, I tossed and turned. I finally settled my nerves, closed my eyes and then...CHIRP! CHIRP! CHIRP!

Lovely...a cricket decided to bunk with us for the evening and man, was he talkative. There would be a few moments of silence...then CHIRP! He'd quiet down, I'd doze off to dream world..then CHIRP!

Needless to say, as I type these words, I'm exhausted because of the CHIRP! Here's the thing: I don't think I'm alone. In the rushed world we live in, we chase after peace and quiet. We desire security, contentment, and happiness. Yet, when we slow down and our head hits the pillow, the crickets come out of hiding.

How am I going to make ends meet? CHIRP!

Why am I here? CHIRP!

Does my work matter? CHIRP!

How can I come back from this? CHIRP!

Am I doing a good job as a parent? CHIRP!

The more we try to silence our doubts, insecurities, and questions, the louder the crickets become. No matter the amount of self-effort and will-power we exhibit, the crickets always make their presence known. They might quiet down for a time, but eventually, they find their voice again.

The only way to silence them for good is to capture our thoughts and bring them to the cross. The One who is powerful enough to hush the wind and the waves is able to still our spirit. The enemy might shout, but the Holy Spirit speaks truth to us in a whisper. By tuning our ears to His voice, we can finally experience some much-needed rest. Good night...I'm going to get some sleep.

Reflection

  • What are the "crickets" currently chirping in your life? Why are they making such a loud noise? What truth do you need to be reminded of to silence them?

Prayer

God, in those times when the enemy speaks lies, help me to tune my ears to the quiet whisper of Your truth. Calm my heart and remind me that my security is found in You and You alone. Give me a peace that passes all understanding. In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
