Your road led through the sea, your pathway through the mighty waters - a pathway no one knew was there! Psalm 77:19
We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps. Proverbs 16:9
Chipotle queso is subpar at best - there I said it. No taking it back now. To say it didn't live up to my expectations would be the understatement of the year. I love Chipotle and go there more than I would care to admit to my friends, my family, and especially my doctor. I'm such a regular that most times I don't even have to say a word and the person behind the counter starts making my meal.
So, when news broke that one of my favorite restaurants was coming out with their version of queso, I shrieked for joy. When the day came, and I placed my tortilla chip in the container I was expecting for my taste buds to be overwhelmed with goodness. Instead, they encountered the equivalent of a watery version of Cheese Whiz.
Everyone has expectations, and quite often those expectations go unmet. Living in a broken world, we are bound to deal with disappointment. Sometimes is comes from trivial things like a letdown of a movie, a poor experience at a restaurant or a frustrating season by our beloved sports team.
But, then there are those times when our unmet expectations rattle us to our core. Life doesn't play out according to the script. Our hopes and dreams get dashed. The story we were attempting to write with our lives goes in a completely different direction than we expected. We get easily discouraged when God doesn’t move the way we think He should. How we respond to this tension matters more than we realize.
We are often a slave to our expectations. God wants us to experience a life to the fullest according to His plans and provision. But, there's a real enemy at work that wants to prevent that from taking place. The enemy knows that if he can get us fixed on what we can accomplish, or what we can manipulate and settle for, he’ll keep us from experiencing all that God has for us. He does this through our expectations. They limit us and force us to settle for something far less than what God has in store for our lives. Our expectations can keep us from experiencing the new thing God is doing.
God has massive hopes and dreams for each of our lives, and when we settle for our expectations, we are limited. Freedom comes through the act of loosening our grip and letting go. To experience the new thing that God is doing, we must be willing to let go of our expectations. When we do this, we experience freedom - the thing we were made for.
- Think of a time recently when your expectations went unmet. How did you respond to this disappointment? What questions and tensions rose to the surface?
- What expectations are you unwilling to let go of and keep holding onto? Why do you keep fighting for this thing?
God, help me to loosen the grip on my expectations. Let me quit authoring my story and hand You the pen. When my expectations flounder, may I not sit in that disappointment, but trust You are directing my steps and there is a higher purpose for everything I experience. In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
